Japanese smartphone maker Sony launched the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact premium smartphones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The smartphones feature the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4K HDR movie recording, Full HD+ HDR display and host of other features. Sony has given up on the block-like design as seen on its previous smartphones and has adopted a more ergonomic approach with a curved rear and edges.

Design

The Sony Xperia XZ2 features 3D glass on the front and rear with a metal frame. With Corning Gorilla Glass 5, the phone is protected from both sides. Unlike the previous Xperia smartphones, the latest flagships have a curved rear and edges that make it comfortable to hold in the hand. The size of the bezels has also been reduced but is still prominent around the edges of the phone. The camera module is now centred on the rear and the fingerprint scanner is now located right below it. The 3.5-mm jack is absent on the Xperia XZ2. The device is IP65/68 certified meaning that it can withstand splashes and spills. With respect to the finish, Sony claims that users will be able to see ambient colours and shine from every angle thanks to the glass and flow of light. The device comes in Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green and Ash Pink. It measures 153x72x11.1mm. Also read: MWC 2018: Nokia 8810 4G, Nokia 1, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8 Sirocco launched

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact has a glass front and a plastic back. It measures 135x65x12.1mm. It is available in Black, White, Silver, Moss Green, Coral Pink. It misses out on wireless charging due to the absence of a glass back. The display, however, is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It has a compact form factor and has a curved surface and smooth frosted texture on the back. Like the XZ2, the compact is IP 65/68 certified.

Display and Audio

The Sony Xperia XZ2/compact has a 5.7 (XZ2 compact has a 5.0-inch) FullHD+(1080x2106p) HDR display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Sony brings its TRILUMINOS Display for mobile, X-Reality for mobile and Dynamic Contrast Enhancer features. The XZ2 users Sony’s BRAVIA TV technology to up-convert content to near High Dynamic Range (HDR). TRILUMINOS display for mobile reportedly produces about 30 percent more colour detail than standard displays. Sony’s Dynamic Vibration System (missing on the XZ2 Compact) analyses audio data and allows the user to feel a sort of bass effect in their hands. The vibration system is coupled with front-facing stereo speakers, and the company claims that they are the loudest Xperia speakers ever made.

Processor and battery

The Sony Xperia XZ2/ XZ2 Compact is powered by the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset. It includes 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There is support for expandable storage up to 400GB via microSD card. With the latest chipset, Sony claims the XZ2 supports up to 1.2Gbps download speeds, up to 150 Mbps upload, and the CPU is 30 percent faster than its predecessor. The Universal Flash Storage accesses data at 1.5GB/s, which is reportedly three times faster than regular memory. The device is backed by a 3180 mAh (2870 mAh on the XZ2 compact) battery. Sony is claiming a day’s battery life. With Smart Stamina, the phone estimates how long your battery will last based on regular usage, and if it thinks you’re going to run out of power later in the day, it prompts to activate the mode which cuts energy consumption. The smartphone also supports fast wireless charging via the Wireless Charging Dock.

Camera

On the camera front, the smartphones feature a 19-megapixel Motion eye camera. The MotionEye camera captures photo/video in 4K HDR. With 4K HDR recording, users can capture content with high contrast and detail. The camera can record 960fps Super slow motion in HD or Full HD. Also shoots 120fps standard slow motion. Owing to the memory-stacked image sensor, the camera is suited for low-light capture. Predictive capture detects motion or a smile and starts taking photos automatically. Autofocus burst tracks and captures sequences of moving objects. The front-facing camera is a 5-megapixel shooter with f/2.2 and supports 5-axis stabilization.

Both the Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact ship with Android Oreo out of the box and will be available globally in March 2018. We can expect treble support since both phones are launching with Android 8.0.
